TIPS & TRICKS · KNOTS
Tie the Davy Knot in 5 Seconds
Four steps, ties in about five seconds, and its tiny profile lets the fly drift naturally. This is the first knot every Stream School student owns.
THE TIP
Through the Eye, Cross Over, Through the Loop
The Davy is the beginner’s go-to for tying a fly to tippet: four steps, almost no wasted tippet, and a profile so small it disappears at the hook eye - which means a more natural drift. Joe never taught an encyclopedia of knots; he taught a handful, drilled until fingers do them in the dark.
JOE SAYS
“Teach a small set, drilled until automatic. The method is a handful of knots tied so many times that fingers do them in the dark, cold, and under pressure.”
- Joe’s knot philosophy, from the Knots & Core Skills Guide
PRACTICE THIS
Five Minutes. Today.
THE 5-MINUTE DRILL
Practice on paracord or a shoelace first - big, visible, zero frustration. Say the cue out loud as you tie: “through the eye, cross over, through the loop, wet and pull.” Tie it three times in a row unassisted, then move to real 5X tippet and beat 30 seconds. Want Joe’s night-fishing standard? Tie it with your eyes closed. For extra holding power, pass the tag through the loop a second time before cinching - the Double Davy.
